Viridian Software contributes PlayStation 4 renderer to SDL2

SDL has long been a popular library for game development. Over the past year its developer community have been actively developing support for PlayStation 4 and 5. As part of this effort, Viridian Software has contributed software renderer support to SDL2 for PlayStation 4 which has now been merged into the official repository.

Both PlayStation 4 and 5 now have full software renderer support in SDL2 and the community are testing the remaining SDL2 functionality through its test applications. Hardware renderer support is still in discussion for SDL2, however, it is expected to be supported for PlayStation 5 as part of a future SDL3 release.

If you’re a registered PlayStation developer, you can access the new renderer via the SDL-PlayStation repository and begin using SDL2 for your titles today.

At Viridian Software, we’ll be continuing to support the SDL community and other open source projects. If you’re a developer or publisher looking to port your SDL game or engine to consoles, reach out to Viridian Software today.
